And if you’re planning a big ski rail trip this winter, it’s indispensable. Verdict – excellent if you fancy a rail
jaunt. Useful even if not as it maps out all resorts, how they are linked, and how to get there".

"A map showing the key rail routes to the main Alpine resorts – a terrific idea”
Mark Smith (The Man in Seat Sixty-One)
This brand new map was launched for the 2011 season and is the first published map to
focus specifically on rail routes through the Alps, with a sufficiently large scale to
enable travellers to plan their journeys to winter sports resorts by train.
Rail is becoming an increasingly
popular choice for people travelling across, and to,
the Alps. It offers a much more pleasant alternative to the conventional flight-and-coach
combination, and imposes a greatly reduced carbon footprint compared with road and air-based
alternatives.
Like most new maps and guidebooks, the inspiration for this map came from attempting to make certain
journeys
and finding the existing publications lacking in key information.
The map covers the entire Alpine region at an approximate scale of 1: 1,400,000. Clear mapping
shows the rail network through the Alps together with the locations of over 400 ski resorts.
High speed rail lines are highlighted and major rail tunnels shown together with mountain railways
and connecting cable cars.
Over 100 resorts that are directly accessible by train are highlighted on the map and
comprehensive information provided on the services they offer in an accompanying table.
A small scale, inset map is also included showing rail routes to the Alps from
surrounding European countries, with approximate journey times, assisting travellers
with planning their route to the region. Please see the
Product Information section for more details on the map and a sample of the mapping.
The map includes many well-known, classic Alpine resorts across Austria, France,
Germany, Italy, Slovenia
and Switzerland, as well as lesser-known places which attract few visitors beyond the
local region, and which offer uncrowded slopes and a rewarding cultural experience. The map is
available both as a handy
folded map
and
wall map. The map also comes with
an accompanying 40-page
factfile giving more information on skiing by train
and the various resorts. Please click on the links below for more information on the different maps available and to take
a look inside the factfile.
